Did you know that your subconscious mind takes up about 90-98% of your brain function. The other 2-10% is your conscious mind. We often try to take care of our conscious mind, but do you know how to take care of your subconscious mind? The subconscious mind has two important functions:
To protect you and help you survive: This is why you flinch or close your eyes if a ball is coming at you, or you jump when someone startles you. This is why you don't have to consciously make your organs function, heart beat, lungs incorporate the oxygen to all your tissues or remember how to walk.
To give you a warning signal: This comes in the form of structural or emotional symptoms. When something traumatic or non traumatic happens, your subconscious mind remembers the sights, colors, smells, taste and feelings associated with it. It then files it in this part of your brain for future reference. Think about walking into your favorite coffee or ice cream shop. As soon as you smell or see the inside of the shop, you already feel better and you haven't even gotten the treat yet. This is how the subconscious mind works. On the flip side, lets say you got bitten by a dog as a young child and don't even remember the details or experience. The subconscious will store the memory and create a protective reaction to protect you in the future. This will have you react every time you see a dog or at least that type of dog or situation until the memory is "re-filed" or resolved.
Have you ever said or reacted to something and wondered why you reacted so strongly? Then, when you talk to others about it, they say you react like that all the time?
